Oscar Hemming Scouting Report

Oscar Hemming Scouting Report

#9 LW/RW, Oscar Hemming

Team: Boston College

Height/Weight: 6-4 200 lbs

Shoots: Left

DOB: August 13, 2008.

Overview: Oscar Hemming hails from Finland.  He is also the younger brother of Dallas Stars 2024 first round pick Emil Hemming.  I had Emil mocked at 16 and he fell to 29 in the 2024 NHL Draft.  This is the first time I heard about Oscar, but I have already seen some NHL Mock Drafts put him as high as 17 with one scouting service giving him the final spot in the top 10 overall.

Strengths:

IQ: He has the intelligence to dominate both offensively and defensively.  He has the offensive awareness and the defensive awareness.

Skating: Can pick up speed in cross overs.  Very fast skater.  He skates forward and backward effectively as he can use his skating to make an impact on both offense and defense.

Passing: Oscar Hemming has the playmaking you want.  Gets the puck open to teammates.

Shooting: Oscar Hemming  has the wrist shot power, wrist shot accuracy, slap shot power, and slap shot accuracy you want.  You are going to have to watch his tape from Finland if you want to see him execute a shot at NHL level.

Weaknesses:

Needs To Shoot Quicker: Sometimes Oscar Hemming needs to release the puck quicker when shooting.  His shooting power and shooting accuracy is good.  His speed and delivery when he shoots the puck is not quick enough by NHL standards.  This Is fixable, but he needs to go to an NHL team with a really good shooting coach.

Inconsistency When Passing: He is not always a precise passer.  There are moments where he will not make an accurate pass or get an accurate pass from his teammate with the puck.  This is an area of his game that needs minor fine tuning.

Projection: Oscar Hemming has the floor of a third line winger in the NHL and the ceiling of a first line winger.  He is versatile enough to play either left winger or right winger.  He is showcasing some NHL traits at Boston College as we speak and projects as a second line winger on an NHL team.  Emil was a first line right winger on his team in Finland before going to the CHL.  Oscar will probably be a really good second line winger.  Think  a Finnish version of former Carolina Hurricanes left winger Nikolaj Ehlers.  Sometimes he skates like a 7 and other times skates like a 9.  His puck skill varies between 6 and 8.  Scoring Ability is a 5 in NCAA, but a 9 in Finland which averages out to a 7.  Debated between a 7 and 9 on physicality gave him an 8.  Did the same with his defensive play.  His strongest trait is hockey sense/IQ where he got a 9/10 from me. He had higher overall grades than Ilya Morozov the last NCAA player I scouted and that is probably why he is being mocked higher too.
